Jordan Alvarez, APC

HE/Him

I am originally from New York and moved to Atlanta in 2022 after I completed graduate school at Auburn. As someone who grew up in a Black and Latino household, I saw many people in my family who needed mental health treatment not have access to care nor have someone who looked like them that they could see. My compassion for my community grew – I fully understood their experiences and felt drawn to be a part of a shift for something better. This influenced my desire to become a therapist so that I could be a resource for those who didn’t have one. In my free time you can often find me outside hiking or playing pickleball and volleyball. I’m also usually finding ways to keep my very active kitty, Pluto, entertained as well as exploring new coffee shops to find the best dirty chai or boba tea. I also enjoy all things Pokémon, concerts and music festivals, as well as traveling around the world.

Jordan's Approach & Mission

As a therapist, I am focused on collaborating with you to find solutions to the difficulties that led you to seek therapy. As a therapist I often will utilize techniques from Solutions-Focused Therapy (SFT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to help clients move through what they’re experiencing with renewed clarity. I integrate my years of professional experience, the research and book chapters I’ve had the opportunity to publish, and my work in a variety of clinical/therapeutic environments into my approach in sessions to balance research-backed, evidence-based strategies with invaluable Compassion.

I am happy to be a therapist for all, though emphasize that what matters most is that clients feel that they and I would work well together! My desire is for that Connection to be the first step to real change in clients’ lives. I have seen many people get stuck in their ways and not feel fully realized, and I have not only the belief that things can be better, but the tools of how to aid clients in realizing how to get there themselves.

I have specialized training working with those who are a part of the LGBTQ+ community, including trans people and those questioning their identity. Additionally, I have often done work with individuals who identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color). I have experience working with eating disorders & body image concerns, anxiety & depression, as well as ADHD. I offer sessions for individuals for adults and teenagers, couples & relationships, and families as needed.

Jordan's Background

• Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Skidmore College

• Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Auburn University

I have worked in a variety of settings including in the outpatient setting of a large public hospital, in a large university counseling center, and at an eating disorder treatment center.

As someone who values the scientific evidence that influences therapy I have contributed a large published body of research on a variety of topics. These include research focused on developing emotion regulation strategies in LGBTQ individuals related to eating disorders, how to lower mental health treatment seeking stigma to increase treatment access among BIPOC populations, and using scalable mental health treatments to increase treatment access. I’ve also presented this research at regional, national, and international conferences.

I enjoy community outreach to ensure that individuals are educated in mental health therapy. I currently serve on the board as the DEI chair of Atlanta Group Psychotherapy Society. I also serve as new membership co-chair for the Atlanta chapter of the international association of eating disorder professionals or IAEDP.
