Meet Ryan

Founder & Owner of Sage Haven Counseling, Therapist

Ryan Austin, LPC, NCC, MS

HE/Him

As a queer individual who was born in the Southwest and grew up in the South, I learned at an early age that other people’s experience didn’t fit mine. This began my deep empathy for anyone who didn’t fit into the majority identity, regardless if their experience was similar to mine or not. Interning in rural Georgia, being a fellowship recipient, working at an Accountability Court, and other moments in my life were all efforts born of this empathy. This empathy has evolved into compassion, which I aim to extend to clients in a way that can be felt every session. I have the personal belief that community is what helps us heal and stay connected to the world around us, so I hope to be a part of my clients’. When I am not working, I aim to be a part of both my own community and the community of the world we live in at large.

I know that it can be strange to reach out to a stranger whom you know nothing about to see if they could be your therapist, so here are a few things to know about me, the person of the counselor! I started a book club in 2022 and I have reconnected with my love for reading since then, and found some new literary favorites along the way. I love to nerd out by watching and discussing Dungeons & Dragons and yes, I do have a Dropout Subscription. I enjoy playing video games, and have recently gotten into indie games, and have found myself passionate about the stories and art created by smaller developers. I am brainstorming on my next tattoo for my patchwork sleeve (currently in its very early stages…). Whenever the weather gets warmer and I take off my usual therapist cardigan, clients are shocked that I have as many as I do. With my partner, we are often at a concert, working on a project around the house, or hosting a get-together with our friends. Lastly, and most importantly, we have three cats: Finn, Jake, and Marshall.

Finn: Mischievous, curious, and loves a cat toy spring.
Jake: Sleepy, hungry, and loves sunlight.
Marshall: Scrappy, cute, and loves to watch birds through windows.

Ryan’s Approach & Mission

As a therapist I utilize IFS, EMDR, and Narrative Therapy. I have engaged in considerable trainings and consultations to integrate IFS and EMDR together, both powerful modalities on their own, which has produced incredible healing and transformative shifts in my clients’ internal and external worlds. Utilizing these approaches alongside the belief that the therapeutic rapport is an attachment experience for clients, I work to be warm and accepting, balanced with grounded clinical skills to create an impactful therapy experience.

My desire is for my clients to know themselves in a new way that brings about change. In a world where judgement, shame, and fear are easily found, I aim to create a therapeutic relationship with my clients where all their parts are welcomed so they can experience Compassion, Clarity, and Connection in our work together and in their lives.

I have extensive experience working with those a part of the LGBTQ+ community, and have worked with all parts of the its spectrum. I have a comprehensive background of working with complex traumas & PTSD, complicated childhoods & attachment wounds, and substance use & addictions.
